June 11, 2020
Hello Sunny Face Families,
We hope you and your family continue to be well as Ontario gradually reopens many of its businesses.
As you have heard, the Provincial Government announced on June 9th that all Child Care Centres in Ontario will be allowed to open as early as Friday June 12th, 2020. Unfortunately, this date is not a realistic or safe timeframe for child care operations to reopen.
Most, if not all of the child care community was shocked to hear the Premier’s announcement to reopen with only 3 days notice, and without having received the new regulations. School based child care centres have not had access to their centres since mid March, and there is potential for decreased funding. These combined scenarios make it unlikely for Sunny Faces to reopen for some time to come.
All Child Care Centres are required to prepare a Reopening Plan that must be approved by Public Health prior to opening. Centres are also required to: train staff, purchase PPE, rewrite policies and procedures, survey parents, prepare budgets, and establish parent guidelines to ensure the safety of staff and children. In addition, Sunny Faces must ‘prioritize’ and ‘select’ the families allowed to return based on government guidelines provided.
In order to do all of this preparation, centres require the regulations that are necessary to move forward. Unfortunately, we have not been given all of the information yet. Centres must address staffing concerns and availability, as well as address the mandated reduced ratios (2:8), which many centres will not be able to financially sustain.
For centres located within school boards, they must coordinate entry into ‘closed’ schools. This will vary per centre as the Principals determine access times. Meeting the new standards and ensuring Sunny Faces is compatible with all regulations is going to take a substantial amount of time.
Sunny Faces is committed to reopening as soon as we are able. Management will be working with our Board of Directors, our school boards, Toronto Children’s Services, the Ministry of Education and Public Health to ensure a smooth and safe opening. Unfortunately, like many centres, we do not have access to funds or resources to support our reopening at this time.
We appreciate your commitment to Sunny Faces and your patience as we work very hard to reopen our centre safely and with financial stability.
For those interested, there will be a rally tomorrow, June 12th, 2020 at 10:30 AM at Premier Ford’s office (823 Albion Road) where participants will advocate on behalf of the Child Care Community, for government support to open Child Care Centres safely and responsibly.
